John McGeary Perkins Jr (Geary) was born and raised in South Louisiana.
Geary was born in Bunkie, raised on the Louisiana State University (LSU)
campus in Baton Rouge and has lived his adult life just across the
Mississippi River in Port Allen of West Baton Rouge Parish.
In High School, Geary was selected to the AAA All-State Track team, was
elected President of the Louisiana 4-H Executive Committee (Louisiana had
80,000 4-H Club members) and was selected to the East Baton Rouge Parish
4-H Hall of Fame.
Geary graduated from Robert E Lee High School in Baton Rouge and earned a
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Animal Science, and Master of Science (MS)
and Doctor of Education (EdD) degrees in Extension Education (with a Plant
Science minor) – all from LSU. Dr Perkins is a Navy and Vietnam Veteran.
Geary worked for the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service, the
LSU Alumni Association and then as a business owner in private business.
Geary's daughter, Anna Mechling has a BS and MS in accounting from LSU
and Geary's son, Austin has a BS in Landscape Architecture from LSU.
Geary has served as President or Chairman of the Board of : West Baton Rouge Parish
Chamber of Commerce, WBR LSU Alumni Association, WBR Crimestoppers, Port
Allen Lions Club, Capitol City Volleyball Officials, and Holy Family Catholic School
Home and School Association. Geary has been elected King of the Krewe of Good
Friends of the Oaks Mardi Gras Parade and selected as the Mother Seton
Award winner from Holy Family Catholic School. Deputy Perkins has also
served as a volunteer in the WBR Sheriff’s Mounted Posse for the past 26
Geary has visited Canada, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Mexico,
Philippine Islands, Belize, Thailand, Japan, Peru and all 50 of the United
States of America.
